I recently had to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on my local machine because Arvixe nolonger supports SQL Server 2005 anymore, but for some reason the installation was failed due to SQL Server 2005 Express Tools error. The error basicly tells us that the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed and need to be removed.
The following steps will tell you how to configure both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 installed on the machine at the same time:
- Start Registry Editor, go to Windows > Run > Regedit > click OK
- Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsft SQL Server\90
- Rename "90" to "old"
The issue has been resolved and you can now rerun the SQL Server 2008 Express installation wizard.
After the installation process completed, go back to the Registry Editor, remove the newly created directory "90", and then change "old" folder back to "90". You should now can run both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 together. Good luck!!
